Y12 Media exam: Paper 1 Learner response

 1) Type up your feedback in full (you do not need to write mark/grade if you do not wish to).

www: some good textual analysis in the same questions and attempts to apply theory throughout.

EBI: Missed marks on industry questions Q4 Q6 the third question requires more focus on "new technology"

2) Read the mark scheme for this exam carefully, paying particular attention to the 'indicative content' for each question. This is some of the best analysis you can do as it gives you an idea of what the exam board is expecting. For your LR blogpost, identify ONE point you could have added for the first three questions in Section A:

Q1 (unseen text) additional point/theory:
The black and white colour scheme offers connotations of class, traditional and style with the limited use of red drawing attention to the brand logo.

Overall the use of media language is consistent with the codes and conventions of the media
form (print advertisement)

how the different modes and language associated with different media forms communicate
multiple meanings

Q2 (unseen text and CSP) additional point/theory/CSP reference:

Hegemonic masculinity – advert suggests patriarchal dominance is still in place despite

Advert manages to be simultaneously representative of 21st century masculinity while also
nodding to traditional male dominance.

Applying van Zoonen: building on Butler, van Zoonen argues sex role stereotypes are
reinforced by the media and this advert emphasises male power, wealth and professional
success.

Hypermasculine representation reflects traditional view of masculinity in 1950s and 1960s.

Emphasis on traditional hegemonic masculinity perhaps a reaction against the gains made by
women during the 1960s culminating in the Equal Pay Act in 1970.

Q3 (music video) additional point/theory/CSP reference:

Lil Nas X and Old Town Road is ideological through its depiction of genre and race.

Links to the Yeehaw Agenda plus the suggestion of historical racism and violence in
the opening scene link the text to recent social and cultural contexts regarding
systemic racism in society. This creates a reference point to the Black Lives Matter
movement and therefore makes the text ideological.

The final scene of the video in the line dancing hall perhaps suggests cultural
conviviality – a postcolonial term describing the harmonious relations between

Arguments against the song and video being ideological could centre around the
postmodern and commercial nature of the text.

The hybridity of the text demonstrates the postmodern context – both in terms of
music genre (country and rap) as well as intertextual references to western films,
TikTok dances and country music culture (line dancing).

3) Now focus on Section B. Section B began with two questions testing your knowledge of industry terminology. Make sure you know the answers to these (get the answers from the mark scheme if you have to):

Benefits of vertical integration:  Greater control of the production process & Lower costs and higher profits.

Definition and benefits of diversification: Making something that is different to your current product to attract a more wider and different audience.

4) The Section B CSP focus was on Blinded By The Light. The impact of new technology on distribution was a weaker area in most answers. Pick out three points from the mark scheme that you could have included in your answer here.

the significance of patterns of ownership and control, including conglomerate ownership,
vertical integration and diversification

New technology has reduced the costs of film production, distribution and marketing due to
the rise in digital editing, YouTube and social media.

In many ways, Blinded By The Light is a very traditional film release – adapted from a book,
directed by Gurinder Chadha who had previous success with Bend It Like Beckham and
bought at auction by New Line Cinema for a traditional summer release.

5) Finally, identify three things you plan to revise before your next Media assessment or mock exam (e.g. terminology, particular theories or CSPs etc.)

I plan to revise more theories and theorists and how to apply them to my questions and embed them properly.
