MIGRAIN: Industries - Regulation

  Read Factsheet 128 and complete the following questions/tasks:  You can  find it online here 1) What is regulation and why do media industries need to be regulated? Regulations is the act of making sure that things or in this case content is in check so that it is suitable for people to watch of a specific age group or such. Media industries must be regulated as there is a variety of content in which can be viewed by practically everyone however in order to make sure that the content meet the correct standards. 2) What is OFCOM responsible for? They are responsible for regulating some content such as TV, radio and Telephone services 3) Look at the section on the OFCOM broadcasting code. Which do you think are the three most important sections of the broadcasting code and why? -Accuracy -Confidential Sources -Reporting in crime I think that these are important as the concept of communication and it's clarity is what allows people to get information from an accurate and trustworthy

MIGRAIN: Industries - Public service broadcasting

  Ofcom review of PSB in Britain In 2020 Ofcom published its findings from a five year review of public service broadcasting in Britain. Read  the introduction to their report - pages 3-7 . You'll need your Greenford Google login to view the document. 1) Look at page 3. Why is it a critical time for public service broadcasting?  This is because audience viewing habits tend to change frequently and due to other growing competition found all over the world. 2) Read page 4. How has TV viewing changed in recent years?  Live broadcasting has been in a decline as audiences prefer a form of content where it is more suitable in their preferred time. Audience have valued PSB's objectives and purposes  such as trustworthy news channels.   Read the Factsheet and complete the following questions/tasks: 1) What does the term 'Cultural Industries' actually refer to? The sheet refers to it as "the creation, production and distribution of products of a cultural or artistic nature." 2) What does Hesmondhalgh identify regarding the societies in which the cultural industries are highly profitable? When the societies that support the conditions where large companies and their political allies both make money together. 3) Why do some media products offer ideologies that challenge capitalism or inequalities in society? Because they need to be constantly competing with each other in order to secure an audience, they need to keep their audience active the same way they are being active, in a way they need to shock their audience by opposing these societal ideaologies. 4) Look at page 2 of the factsheet.
