MIGRAIN: Introduction to Representation

1) Why is representation an important concept in Media Studies?

Representation is important as it allows for people to show a certain group of people

2) How does the example of Kate Middleton show the way different meanings can be created in the media?

It shows that pictures are a powerful tool of manipulation as it can portray many meaning to it such as the picture of her drinking would otherwise connote being an alcoholic.

3) Summarise the section 'The how, who and why of media representation' in 50 words.
When looking at a media piece it is important to question the intentions of the producer and if they are considering the needs of the audience, following genres and the type of narrative they are trying to portray. It also mentions the overall effect of what it does and why it has that effect on the audience however the effect of "naturalisation" will majorly numb this as people will no longer question it.

4) How does Stuart Hall's theory of preferred and oppositional readings fit with representation?
The preferred reading would be what the producer would want you to see no matter if it makes them look bad or good and the oppositional would be how people question why they chose that image and why and the intentions of them.

5) How has new technology changed the way representations are created in the media?
The use of new technology does change how people are represented as new expensive technology is usually associated with wealthy people as they have such a large amount of disposable income that they can use it to buy such items.

6) What example is provided of how national identity is represented in Britain - and how some audiences use social media to challenge this?
The politicians are seen as being patriotic as they are showing how they are proud to be British, however they have been challenged by users on social media as people have a more noticeable voice on the platform.

Watch the clip from Luther that we studied in class (Season 1, Episode 1 - minute 7.40-10.00 - you'll need your Greenford Google login to access the clip). Now answer these final two questions:

7) Write a paragraph analysing the dominant and alternative representations you can find in the clip from Luther.
One dominant representation would be how he seems to be a very smart individual and his methods. Another dominant reading would be that women are very vulnerable and need someone stronger to do their work for them so that they are able to take the blame.

8) Write a paragraph applying a selection of our representation theories to the clip from Luther. Our summary of each theory may help you here:
Men are usually seen seen as being short fused in which it is usually gender stereotyped by men being the more aggressive gender compared to women, however people may say that this is what allows them to be the more dominant gender than women.
