MIGRAIN: Introduction to feminism

 1) Why did Laura Bates start the Everyday Sexism project?

She wanted to raise more awareness about the matter, she also wanted to share her experiences with others to show how it feel and to find out the different experiences that both men and women had with gender imbalance.

2) How does the Everyday Sexism project link to the concept of post-feminism? Is feminism still required in western societies?
It shows that some sort of sexism is still around today and that not only do women experience it, so do men.

3) Why was new technology essential to the success of the Everyday Sexism project?
This is because it allows them to share the message everywhere and because it is being used on the internet it allows for lots of people to see within a short amount of time.

4) Will there be a point in the future when the Everyday Sexism project is not required? What is YOUR view on the future of feminism?
I don't think that it would be around for that long but I do think that it may induce some changes, however the reason why I do not think it would be around for that long is because I do not think that it it very innovative or does not change things enough as people on the website just post their experiences about gender imbalance and such.

Read the article: The Fourth Wave? Feminism in the Digital Age in MM55 (p64). You'll find the article in our Media Magazine archive here.

1) Summarise the questions in the first two sub-headings: What is networked feminism? Why is it a problem?
Network feminism is the different "waves" that have occurred such as the suffrage and the ones after it, the problem with this is that overtime people have lost the actual meaning of what feminism is actually for instead people depicting them as being narcissistic.

2) What are the four waves of feminism? Do you agree that we are in a fourth wave of ‘networked feminism’?
The four waves of feminism are the different times of when women went out to fight for their rights and such, the suffrage being the first with voting.
I think that we have somewhat entered it as there is a new wave of feminists but that have the wrong idea of what feminism is as they have a very extreme view on things as they have shaped the public image of them being narcissistic

3) Focus on the examples in the article. Write a short summary of EACH of the following: Everyday Sexism, HeForShe, FCKH8 campaign, This Girl Can.
Everyday sexism was a digital campaign of sorts in which people could share their experiences of gender imbalance.

HeForShe focuses on males and their importance in helping equality between men and women

FCKH8 focuses on modern representation of young girls on the internet and how they are not this "princess in need"

This girl can is a campaign in which focuses on the wellbeing of women which would help their mental and physical image

4) What is your opinion with regards to feminism and new/digital media? Do you agree with the concept of a 'fourth wave' of feminism post-2010 or are recent developments like the Everyday Sexism project merely an extension of the third wave of feminism from the 1990s?

I think that the 4th wave of feminism creates a bad image for the actual motive for feminists as most proclaimed feminists have a "men are bad" motive and they talk about killing them and such, and I think that those kinds of people having access to the internet is bad as they can have such and influence on people and make them have the wrong idea of the initial intentions of a feminist.
