MIGRAIN: Industries - Regulation

Read Factsheet 128 and complete the following questions/tasks: You can find it online here

1) What is regulation and why do media industries need to be regulated?
Regulations is the act of making sure that things or in this case content is in check so that it is suitable for people to watch of a specific age group or such. Media industries must be regulated as there is a variety of content in which can be viewed by practically everyone however in order to make sure that the content meet the correct standards.

2) What is OFCOM responsible for?
They are responsible for regulating some content such as TV, radio and Telephone services

3) Look at the section on the OFCOM broadcasting code. Which do you think are the three most important sections of the broadcasting code and why?
-Accuracy
-Confidential Sources
-Reporting in crime

I think that these are important as the concept of communication and it's clarity is what allows people to get information from an accurate and trustworthy source.

4) Do you agree with OFCOM that Channel 4 was wrong to broadcast 'Wolverine' at 6.55pm on a Sunday evening? Why?
I think that it may have wrong as children may have been watching the movie and wolverine being rated 13.

5) List five of the sections in the old Press Complaints Commission's Code of Practice.
Section 1: Accuracy
Section 2: Opportunity to Reply
Section 3: Privacy
Section 4: Harassment
Section 5: Intrusion Into Grief and Shock

6) Why was the Press Complaints Commission criticised?
If the newspaper were to do something offensive then they could apologise, however there is nothing that is making them, so if they did do something offensive then they won't have to do anything.

7) What was the Leveson enquiry and why was it set up?
It was a book that was made to bring up press behaviours such as the phone hacking incidents  of the royal family and such.

8) What was the PCC replaced with in 2014?
It was replaced by the IPSO

9) What is your opinion on press regulation? Is a free press an important part of living in a democracy or should newspapers face statutory regulation like TV and radio?
I think that regulation on the press is somewhat needed such as thing as racist comments or hate speech, etc however somethings should not be regulated as it may also stop publishers from having a limit to what they post

10) Why is the internet so difficult to regulate?
There are billions of users on the internet, and a lot of platforms in which content is posted so trying to regulate the internet is near to impossible or even impossible, on the internet there are more users than regulators which is another factor to put in place.
