MIGRAIN: Reading an image - media codes

 1) Analyse this RBK 50 Cent advert using the media codes you learned in the lesson: Technical, Written or verbal, Symbolic or non-verbal, Narrative. Write a paragraph for each one exploring the way meanings are created using those media codes.

In the advertisement a monochrome colour is used along with a medium close-up of 50 cent's face and a paper full of fingerprints, 50 cent is wearing military clothing connoting authority and bravery, the fingerprints and the monochrome colour link to each other by connoting identity and how there is only one of him which is also reinforced by the slogan which is written in serif; "I am what I am" which could be shown as him claiming his identity as the use of serif is very authoritative compared to sans serif
The low lighting connotes seriousness which is also shown by his facial expression.

2) Next, analyse a print advert of your choice using the same media codes: Technical, Written or verbal, Symbolic or non-verbal, Narrative. Make sure you add your chosen print advert using the 'Add image' button in blogger (use Google Images to find the advert first and save it to your pictures or downloads).

In this print advert the denotations are a person wearing a shoe that is the same colour as the cartilages and muscles, the way that this shoe is represented connotes that the shoe should work the same as if it were part of your body as it is blending in with the colour, the red colour denotes the muscles but it also connotes power which could show the power of the shoes. The slogan located at the top right says that they "study your body so thoroughly before making a shoe". The use of sans serif connotes the research of the shoes being modern/recent as they have used modern science/technology to optimise their shoe for the customer so that they may have a better experience when wearing their shoe.
